Spalding Parent Class

September 15, 2016

6:00-9:00 p.m.

A Spalding class will be held on September 15th to educate parents about the use of the Spalding program at FCA.  This class will feature the fundamentals of the Spalding handwriting and phonogram program.  We are proud to be a Spalding accredited school and feel that this program helps students succeed in every aspect of their education.

It is highly recommended, especially if you are new to FCA, that you attend this class to familiarize yourself with this Language Arts program.  You will find it much easier to help your student(s) at home with the knowledge you gain from the course.

To sign up for the class, please contact the office or email Mrs. Lucas.

Spalding’s Writing Road to Reading, a total language arts program, integrates essential research-based components, an educational philosophy, and a methodology consisting of time-tested principles of learning and instruction.

The Spalding Method is:

  • Explicit
  • Sequential
  • Multisensory
  • Diagnostic

Students learn the purpose for every task and are active participants throughout Spalding lessons. Daily observations and assessments enable teachers to tailor instruction to meet each child’s individual needs: English Language Learners of all ages, Special Needs Students and Gifted. Thus, differentiated instruction is embedded in The Spalding Method.

Spalding teachers believe that students’ physical and mental well-being is a primary concern and that all children can learn.

The Spalding Method teaches phonemic awareness explicitly through the use of phonogram cards. Teachers use these cards in the classroom in a very specific way.  It is highly recommended that you understand how these cards are used so that you can help your child master these skills.  This can be done in a number of ways:

  • Purchase a set of phonogram cards for use at home.  You can purchase them at the front office for $14.00 or order them on-line.
  • Listen to a phonogram CD.  You can check out a CD from the FCA Library or purchase one on-line.
  • Attend a Spalding mini-course.
  • Arrange a time with your child’s teacher to come and observe a phonogram lesson.
